The Yarrow builds community relationships with special Age UK Charity Lunch

The Yarrow welcomed a group of special customers from Age UK on Monday 3 December, as part of its efforts to help the local community.

The Broadstairs hotel, which is part of the EKC Group, welcomed 100 Age UK customers and staff into its restaurant for a free three course lunch for Christmas.

Having read an article on social media regarding the work Age UK do, hotel manager James Redshaw decided to host a lunch for the service users of Age UK as well as the staff who offer services to the elderly.

James said: “The harsh reality is, some elderly people are alone at Christmas. The work Age UK do improves their Christmas experience and I hope the opportunity we’re providing can do the same.”

The Yarrow is the first hotel of its kind in the UK, as it takes on students from EKC Group’s Broadstairs College where they have developed their skills, allowing them an inspirational learning environment where they can grow their commercial mindset.

Seven of the College’s students helped to serve in the lunch, with James stating the work they had done was ‘invaluable’ in delivering the charitable event.  

When asked why this event was so important to The Yarrow, James said: “In my opinion, a hotel should be the heart of the local community, I see this as building those bridges with the community. I’m really excited to build these types of community relationships where people can really benefit from our hotel.”

The event proved such a success, there will be a second one taking place later this month.

By donating 200 three-course lunches to the charity, James and the team are hopeful this will be the start of a supportive relationship between both The Yarrow and Age UK.

James said: “Elderly people are the people we work with most in the accommodation industry and it’s so rewarding to give back to the older generation.”

The event ran alongside EKC Group’s ‘Community Week’ which saw staff and students from across its family of Colleges and Business Units delivering social action projects within the communities we serve.
