Group becomes new Maths Centre for Excellence

EKC Group, a family of five colleges and two business units, has been selected as one of twenty-one centres nationally to deliver a new initiative in order to help improve the basic maths skills of low attaining students aged over 16-years-old.

The new title of Maths Centre for Excellence comes with a funding boost which will see the Group receive an additional £380,000 per year from Government. The investment aims to increase the quality of mathematics teaching, and enhance the qualification levels as a result. EKC Group Director of Curriculum Development Hayley Barden was the lead on the winning bid.

She said “I’m very excited and extremely proud that EKC Group has been presented with this amazing opportunity. It’s really fantastic to have been chosen to become a Maths Centre for Excellence.”

The Group will use the additional funding to ensure the development of innovative teaching approaches, while also ensuring students receive more resources and methods to support them to achieve their full potential and progress onto their next steps.

Hayley Barden said: “This work will all contribute to an increased student experience while also helping to prepare them for a more successful working life after college. The Group made the decision to apply for the funding as we’re passionate about improving the outcomes of our students, and meeting the needs of the communities we serve. This will help us to do that.”

The funding will remain in place for five years, ensuring the Group has a legacy for all students that take mathematics. Hayley says that by the time the funding ends, the Group will have achieved a sustained and innovative approach to maths delivery and developed a strong network of maths specialism to share and look at new practice.
