You Said, We Did: Supporting Our Students During Lockdown

In April, we asked students from across our family of Colleges and Business Units to take part in our ‘Lockdown Survey’ to share their views and experiences of life during the lockdown period.

The feedback collected through the Survey enabled us to identify key areas to enhance the support available to our students, and to carry out swift interventions to ensure our students’ education, health and wellbeing were not at a disadvantage.

These interventions included:

  • Enhancing our counselling and pastoral support services for students affected by the lockdown experience.

  • Supplying internet dongles to students who were unable to access a reliable Wi-Fi connection.

  • Ensuring all students and apprentices received regular check-in sessions with their Mentors or Assessors to talk about their experiences and to be signposted to support services where needed.

  • Creating an online wellbeing centre for students to access a wide range of resources, information and advice to enhance their wellbeing on-demand.

  • Providing students with information and contact details for local support organisations, charities and food banks, and helping to connect these organisations with our students where needed.

  • Ensuring our Mentors will be available throughout the summer months to provide additional support to students who need it.

We’d like to thank the 1,426 students who took part in our ‘Lockdown Survey’. The comments and suggestions received have enabled us to enhance the experiences of many students across East Kent.

We look forward to welcoming our students back in September, and wish all those completing their qualifications, the best of luck in their next steps.
