Updates: Colleges & Business Units | Commercial Outlets and Nurseries
Advice for: Students, Parents and Carers | College Applicants | Apprentices
Being in the public services is more than just a job, it requires a different ethos, culture and commitment, so from day one, these themes will be used to educate and prepare you for work in the public services. You will be expected to wear uniform every day, in line with many public services, and conduct yourself in a manner befitting a public servant. This will include respect, teamwork and discipline.
During this programme you will have the opportunity to research and learn about a selection of integral units including team and leadership, land navigation, sport and fitness and public service skills. You will also gain skills in teamwork, communication, leadership, fitness, resilience, honesty, enthusiasm, commitment, discipline and respect, as well as improving confidence.
Through a combination of practical work, presentations, practical observations, a portfolio of assignments, case studies and tests.
This course will support in applying for higher education or with progressing into a career across a range of public services including the armed forces, fire service, prison service, border force, police, customs and excise, and non-uniformed public services.
As part of the Study Programme, all students will have to complete a number of hours in an industry placement – students will be supported in finding a relevant placement. All students will also have the opportunity to listen to external speakers and visit public service establishments and take part in residential trips with the military.
As this course requires something different from you, we run interview days that all applicants must attend. The interview days will aim to test your suitability for a public services course and give you an insight into the life of a public services student.
We do this because not all people are suitable for this profession. We will be looking at your academic capabilities, teamwork and leadership skills and general qualities against those of the public services. After successfully completing the interview days and gaining the necessary qualifications, you will be invited to enrol.
Students are required to purchase uniform (the list of uniform will be provided at enrolment), folders and stationery. They are also required to pay into the trips fund (within the first two weeks of the course).
