Broadstairs College lecturer stars in recruitment campaign

Broadstairs College Chef Lecturer, Gareth Oliver, has been chosen to feature in a region-wide recruitment campaign to find the next generation of passionate lecturers in Post-16 further education.

Chef Lecturer Gareth Oliver, who works for EKC Group’s Broadstairs College, appears in a video that has been created as part of the ‘Become a Lecturer’ campaign. The project is being funded by the South East Local Enterprise Partnership (SELEP), to combat shortages of lecturers in key subject areas in colleges across Essex, Kent and East Sussex. These include construction, engineering, health and care, finance and accounting, digital and catering.

After a decade in industry, working his way up to become head chef in local restaurants and in the West End in London, Mr Oliver decided he needed a new challenge and went into teaching.

“Working as a lecturer is a fantastic job, no two days are the same,” said Mr Oliver. “You get to enhance and develop the skills of all these new students who want to become top chefs and work around the country. Some of our students go on to work in top Michelin star restaurants which is nice and very rewarding for us, seeing them grow as much as they possibly can.”

Project Director Tim Strickland said: “We need people with real-life experience to join our teaching teams to help us educate the workforce of the future to support economic growth and productivity.

“It’s an extremely worthwhile profession and will appeal to people who are passionate about their subject area, would like a secure income and pension, are looking to work regular hours and wish to equip students with the skills they need to forge their own careers.”

As well as videos from lecturers explaining why they love teaching, the website also contains a wealth of information about what is required in teaching.
