How to Apply

There are only a limited number of places so early application is advisable.

Applications for the Junior College will close on the last day of term 4 (31st March 2023). Please note that any late applications may not be taken forward.

Applications must be made by the parent/carer of the young person.

Entry requirements

We welcome applications from students currently in Year 9, who demonstrate a real desire and enthusiasm to pursue an industry-relevant pathway. This means that the applicant must be aged 14 on 31 August 2023 in order to be eligible to study with us. All applicants will need to attend a mandatory talk, as well as monitored taster sessions in your vocational area of choice. Within your application, you will be required to provide a reference from your current or most recent education provider.

Admissions Process

All applicants will follow the same admission process which includes a mandatory talk, an interview, and an assessment. Due to the admissions process for the Junior College, you will not receive a response to your application until after the closing date for all applications. If you are concerned your application has not been received, please email us and we can confirm that it has been received.

Mandatory Talk

Parents of students would usually be invited to a mandatory talk which outlines the Junior College Admissions Policy and explains the next steps in the process. This talk will now be sent to you in digital format. You will be sent a link in early April and you will need to watch this before your interview.

Interviews

We’ll look to hold interviews via video conferencing or by telephone, and will ensure that we get in touch with you to book this in. These will take place throughout May and June.

Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) Interviews

If a student has an Education Health Care Plan, you will be required to have an initial discussion with the Additional Learning Support team to discuss your EHCP and the provision. This will be pre-arranged and will happen before your interview.

Assessment

Previously, assessment days took place before interviews and would enable us to see how students perform within their chosen pathway. This is an important part of the admissions process as it allows staff to see how you engage in curriculum, as well as your suitability against the key criteria (see Admissions Policy).

Due to the current situation, we will be looking to undertake these assessments may take place in one of two ways:

On-site – We will invite students in for an assessment day with the relevant programme area. In this situation, we will ensure we follow the Government advice and guidelines around social distancing.

Virtual – Students will be sent a project to complete from home. This will be relevant to their chosen area and will need to be submitted for marking within the given time frame.

Offers and Appeals

There are approximately 23 places available within Broadstairs Junior College (admission numbers are dependent on courses running. Please refer to our Admission Policy) Therefore, places will not be offered until all applicants have been interviewed and attended /submitted their assessment. Broadstairs Junior College will then make decisions based on the students' applications, interviews and assessments.
