English GCSE and Functional Skills

An essential qualification if you want to go on to further study, and a basic requirement for many jobs.

What does this course involve?

GCSE English is designed to enable students of all abilities to develop the skills they need to read, understand and analyse a wide range of different texts covering the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, as well as to write clearly, coherently and accurately using a range of vocabulary and sentence structures. Further advice will be given on delivering presentations and performing other speaking and listening tasks.

The course is broken down into two units, both assessed using a final, unseen examination:

Paper 1: Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing (50%)

Section A: Reading – one literature fiction text (25%)
Section B: Writing – descriptive or narrative writing (25%)

Paper 2: Writers' Viewpoints and Perspectives (50%)

Section A: Reading – one non-fiction text and one literary non-fiction text (25%)
Section B: Writing – writing to present a viewpoint (25%)

Non-examination Assessment: Spoken Language (0% weighting of GCSE)

Assessment

You will complete two final exams, both unseen. There will also be speaking and listening assessments throughout the course of the study.
