Introducing a new way of learning for 14–16 year olds.
Only colleges that have been rated Good or Outstanding by Ofsted, like Broadstairs College, can offer Year 10 students this exciting opportunity. We know from talking to parents that some young people have a clear vision of their future career and the Junior College gives them the opportunity to kick-start their journey two years early.
All students will engage in core subjects of maths and English, taught within our purpose-built Junior College area. We identify that some students have a clear idea of the industry they want to progress into and so the Study Programme offers them the opportunity to study a vocational qualification for 50% of their time at the College. This would mean they would take part in post-16 lessons, which, as our results demonstrate, raises aspirations, increases progress and encourages maturity through learning alongside our post-16 learners. Curriculum areas in which students may be able to study, subject to available places, include:
On successful completion, students can then progress further onto any vocational pathways at Broadstairs College and then onto university, an Apprenticeship or work. What is more, because of their emphasis on the core subjects of maths and English, our courses also enable students to change direction at 16+ if they do decide to follow other paths to success in adult life.
