The Local Area
Thanet is a 10 square kilometre peninsula on the South-eastern most corner of England. In the Victorian era, Thanet was part of what was known as Britain’s leisure coast, an area of good weather and seaside resorts that was popular as a holiday destination before overseas travel became widely available.
The local towns
The area is known for its three main towns, Margate, Ramsgate and Broadstairs, where the college is located. Each have their own character, with Margate’s fine sandy beaches, Ramsgate’s attractive harbour and Broadstairs charming town centre. In between them is Westwood Cross shopping outlet with its wide range of shops. All areas in Thanet can be reached easily by public transport.
Getting here
Chances are that you will fly into either Heathrow or Gatwick Airports. It is possible to get to the college by train via central London, but if you are coming to study we will help arrange a car to pick you up. It’s a lot easier and a lot faster, especially if you have never travelled in the UK before!
Broadstairs is about 2 hours from Heathrow and 1 hour 45 minutes from Gatwick by car. Both Airports have links to Central London, and trains run to and from London Victoria Rail Station every hour until midnight. There is also a high speed rail service.
Remember that trains and the London Underground (Metro) does not run all night! Most lines stop running around 11:00pm. Thanet College has a welfare support mobile (cell) phone. We will give you the number before you travel so that you can contact a member of staff if you need help when you arrive.
