World's Largest Wind Farm Operator Picks Thanet College Students For National Opening Ceremony

You may have seen the turbines off the coast of Thanet. You may have witnessed the huge vessels leaving Ramsgate port. Did you also realise that Thanet now has the largest operational wind farm in the world?

When completed, the Vattenfall Thanet Offshore Wind Farm will comprise of 100 wind turbines with the capacity to supply approximately 240,000 homes each year with clean energy.

There are plans for more wind farms off the coast of the UK, including the London Array project, and it is having a positive impact on employment locally and on the national steel industry which had previously been in decline.

This huge project comes to an end this summer and will culminate in an event celebrating the official opening. Vattenfall need promotional material and displays in the run up to the event this September as well as performances to entertain the guests. VIP guest invites will include councillors, politicians, other dignatories and the Prime Minister.

Learners from the Arts and Sciences department at Thanet College have the incredible opportunity of working on this national event and have been given the sole responsibility of the creative.

This week Vattenfall presented the brief setting out key requirements including producing a Display for use at the opening ceremony and other events. Media students are also producing a promotional video and may even be able to travel out to the wind farm itself to film.

Head of Arts and Sciences Nick Holbrook-Sutcliffe said after the presentation:

“Mandy Broughton (Vattenfall) asked me if all colleges in England were as full of life and activity as this one.  They were genuinely surprised by our energy and pro-active response. It filled them with confidence and they made reference to your entrepreneurial spirit.

What a great experience, and a huge opportunity”
