Steve Takes Students To See Local Community

A group of students were taken on a number of visits in the local area as part of their Society Health & Development Diploma, all organised by Steve Houlihan, one of the College’s lecturers working on the new diploma.

To help improve the student’s awareness of how work places operate, Steve first took them at an urban renewal within Cliftonville where local councillors, residents, volunteer workers and the police community officers welcomed the students while showing them around projects, including the Dalby Square regeneration.
Links with the Mental Health Trust have also been developed.

The students have spent time at the in-patient units at both Canterbury and Margate and also with service users in Ramsgate where students quizzed staff and service users on how well supported people with mental health issues felt in our local community.

Following the visits opportunities to place students as part of their work placement have arisen. Staff at the mental health trust were very impressed with the professional approach, interest and preparation shown by our students.

The students will also be visiting parliament shortly to understand more about how laws are formed and translated into policy. On the lighter side we will also be taking the opportunity to visit Guy’s Hospital museum.

It is always a concern on taking students on visits but Steve has nothing but praise for the maturity and confidence of the students and finished by saying,

“the students have impressed me. They have prepared well, dressed professionally, asked good questions and gone outside their comfort zone. They have been a credit to the college”.
