Royal Logistics Corps Challenge

A team of 15 of our own catering students attended the recent Royal Logistic Corps Challenge 2010 alongside 13 other colleges earlier in the week where they competed in a variety of events that included:
Pairs of students took turns attacking random targets while passing through a wooded area in the ‘Paintball Close Quarters Combat Firing Range’.
‘The Moving Challenge’ was to transport ammunitions and fuel between two ports without causing an explosion while being given orders by three other students. Interestingly our students completed the challenge just 40 seconds slower than the winners who completed the task in less than 7 minutes.
Another task was to identify 10 items of contraband from x-ray pictures taken of post being shipped to other countries for soldiers. The items ranged from simple cans of lager through to firearms.
Bomb disposal sounds self explanatory however the students had to use ropes, pulleys, suckers and other equipment to open two car doors and remove the ‘bomb’ from the boot of a car and place it on the ground 3 meters away. The catch was that it all had to be completed at a 10 meter distance from the car!
Finally there was something a bit more fitting for our team. The Cooking Challenge consisted of a team representative having to cook and plate a 3 egg omelette in the quickest time. 1st year Lee Andrews, from class 1A, represented Thanet College’s 7 Alpha Squad and won with a time of 1min 33.22s.
Lunch was supplied from a field kitchen and cooked by a combined British and Ghurkha regiment. Students also had the opportunity to sit in the army’s heavy vehicles and talk to serving soldiers throughout the day.
