Health and Safety Presentation Evening

The Motor Vehicle Department at Thanet College hosted an evening presentation on Health and Safety in the Motor Vehicle environment on Tuesday 2nd February 2010.
The talk was given by Mike Walters who is the principle inspector for the Kent region of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

The purpose of the evening was to highlight to local businesses how beneficial working with the Executive could be and to signpost some useful links in the HSE website. Mike said “I would like to dispel some of the myths about the HSE, we used to be, and sometimes still are, viewed as Health and Safety police, but we would much rather help people to avoid accidents than be prosecuting those that have had them”

Several staff attended to support their own CPD and found the evening most informative. Nicola Joyce from PC maintenance said that although the evening was aimed at MV she still found some useful information was presented to help her in the college environment.

Local businessmen that attended were able to discuss concerns during a lively question and answer session at the end of the presentation and take away helpful booklets and resources to assist in making their premises a safer place to work. Shaun Collier of Thanet Motor Centre in Margate said “It was quite informative and several good things were discussed that prompted us to review our procedures at work in light of new regulations”

This was a successful event for the College and hopefully one of many that will develop links with, and support, the local business community.
