Catering Students Win Big at Salon Culinaire

30 Students from the College’s Catering department were busy preparing for one of the largest and most important competitions of the calendar year.
The Wessex Salon Culinaire, organised by the Craft Guild of Chefs and part of World Skills UK, is the UK's biggest Young Chef & Waiting Competition. The competition, held at the Bournemouth International Centre, attracts hundreds of competitors from College’s across the region.
20 Colleges competed against each other in three different areas: Kitchen and Larder; Pastry; and Restaurant Skills. Thanet College representatives were busy weeks beforehand preparing for the event with the support and encouragement from tutors Susan George, Alun John and Paul Manning.
Thanet College went home with 23 medals: 3 gold, 9 silver and 11 bronze. It was the highest number of accolades we’ve achieved in recent years despite competition be considerably higher standard than in past years..
Course Leader for Advanced Craft students Paul Manning said after:
“Enormous praise to the students and staff alike for their determination and dedication for this outstanding achievement. To achieve this amount of success has meant many additional hours of preparation and practicing to enable the standard to which all of the students achieved. Competition standards have greatly improved over the past year and this is true justification to the students and staff for all their hard work.
Competitions are excellent opportunity for the learners to test their skills against students from other colleges. These results surely cement Thanet College's reputation as one of the leading catering colleges in the country.
