Argyle Centre Oscars

Thanet College Staff: Elliott Sherry, Jill Bayford, Lucy McLeod, Paul Maddox, Sarah Wheeler & Leanne Rolls

(Organisations Serving the Community Awards Recognising Success!)

Local training providers joined together in celebration this week when a special ‘Oscar’ ceremony was held at the Argyle Centre in Ramsgate

TNG, SES Tutors, Maximus and Thanet College are all based at the centre and have helped residents of Thanet develop the confidence and skills needed to go on to further training or to find work. Not an easy task in today’s competative job market, but many people are getting the help so greatly needed to fulfil their goals.

The event, organised by TNG Business Manager Karen McChesney, brought together key organisations in the area including local Jobcentres and Thanet Council’s Gateway Plus. The Mayor of Ramsgate, Councillor David Green, and Principal of Thanet College, Graham Razey, presented ‘Oscar’ awards to just some of the people who have achieved at the centre.

Thanet College’s Community Education tutor Paul Maddox spoke about their two award winners Balraj Patel and Simon Carter, who both sought guidance after a period of unemployment.

“Balraj attended our Introduction to Teaching Assistant course and studied hard with determination and enthusiasm” said Paul, “He’s now undertaking voluntary work with Upton School whilst he completes his NVQ qualification.”

Simon has completed a course preparing him to teach in the lifelong sector and hopes to secure teaching hours before continuing his studies.

After the formalities the visitors were ushered in to an adjoining room for refreshments and networking. Thanet College Hospitality student Elliott Sherry and Restaurant supervisor Alun John were on hand to distribute sweet canapes, cupcakes and gatueuxs made by the college’s third year Patisserie students.
