Message from the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills

Important information for home (UK) and EU applicants about student finance: You might have heard reports of changes English universities and colleges will make in 2012. Don’t be put off – the system is designed so that students from England studying full-time for their first degree or other higher education course will not have to pay anything while they study.  You don’t have to pay for your course yourself upfront: you can get a loan to cover the cost of your tuition, which you only start to pay back when you are earning over £21,000 a year.  In addition, if you are a UK applicant you could also benefit from a wide-range of financial support to help cover the cost of accommodation and living costs.  For further information about fees and the financial support available visit http://www.bis.gov.uk/studentfinance.

Financial support

Our Student Support staff administer various Government discretionary support funds to assist part-time and fulltime ‘home’ students who have additional financial need. If you’re eligible to apply for financial support it is meanstested and is dependent upon individual circumstances. Student finance changes all the times though, so check what you might be eligible for when applying.

There are a variety of ways you can support yourself during your time at university including grants, loans and bursaries. For up-to-date advice on student fees, the student support package and general financial support for Higher Education students contact the University’s i-zone, and also visit www.studentfinance-yourfuture.direct.gov.uk/costs
