What does this course involve?

Your study programme will consist of units delivered at our well-equipped workshops at East Kent College Dover campus and a number of short courses at a local specialist partner. Some of the units/courses you will complete are:

  • Producing components using hand fitting techniques
  • Preparing and using lathes for turning operations
  • Vessel fire prevention and firefighting
  • Emergency First Aid in response to maritime accidents or medical emergency
  • Maritime security

This list is not exhaustive, but gives you an insight into the variety of topics you will cover. If you did not obtain a 4 or C in both English and Maths you will also study this on your program. The program will also include guest speakers and work experience.

Requirements

What qualifications do I need?

English 3 or D, Maths 4 or C, plus two more 4 or Ds.

Assessment

Written assignments, exams and practical assignments.

Fees & Costs


If you are 16-18yrs old at the start of the Study Programme, it will be free.
There may be additional payments required for trips, visits and other materials.


For adult learners (over 19) financial support towards the costs of your
Study Programme may be available. Eligible students may be able to get help with
course related costs such as travel, equipment and childcare.


If you are aged 19 and over an Advanced Learning loan may be available if you
are studying at Level 3 and above. Eligible students may be able to get help
with course related costs such as travel, equipment and childcare.

Opportunities

This course could lead to working in the merchant navy as a motorman or fitter, 4th Engineer on Super Yachts or progressing to a higher education course aimed at Marine Engineers in the Merchant Navy.
