Thanet Torches leave College
Thanet College handed over the Thanet Olympic and Paralympics Torches to Bromstone Primary School on Tuesday 4 January in the first handover of 2012.
Head teacher Nigel Utton and the school’s ambassadors Chloe and Brandon accepted the two torches and welcomed Performing Arts students and the College’s Industrial Professor, former England Cricketer Geraint Jones into the school for the torches latest handover. Public Services students Rhys Little, Ellie Grimes and Liam Finch handed over the torches and Performing Arts students treated the children to the piece they performed at the World Skills event in London last year.
Director of Partnerships Lucy McLeod presented the school with a donation of £500 from the College, with which Mr. Utton plans to commission an Olympic-themed mosaic by local artist Martin Cheek who will be assisted by the school’s pupils, which he said would be a great way to remember the Olympics by. He also thanked Thanet College for the handover and lively performance, which he added, “made the beginning of the school year special.”
Lucy McLeod said the College were proud to take part in the relay. “'We are delighted that the Thanet Torch Relay has given us the opportunity to work in partnership with Bromstone Primary School, and we are looking forward to welcoming their children to the College for a taster day in the future.”
Bromstone pupils completed the handover by singing a sign language version of Queen’s ‘We are the Champions’.
One of the two torches was designed last year by Thanet College Art and Design students Terrell Ovid and Holly Harbourne, and manufactured by Engineering student Paul Robins.
The torches are currently being carried across the district, staying in each school for a week, reaching their final destination in July 2012 in time for the start of the Olympic Games. By then, everyone of school age in Thanet will have had a tangible and personal experience linked to this unique moment in history.
