Thanet College and The Local Community
Thanet College is a medium sized college of further education with:
- 2000 full time students
- 3000 part time students
- 380 contracted staff and 50 agency staff
The mission of the college is to aim to raise aspirations, develop skills and deliver quality. The College core values are:
- High performance and top quality;
- A culture of mutual respect and fairness;
- Professionalism with a strong customer focus;
- The diversity of our learners, and inspiring and empowering people to achieve their potential.
The current college inspection profile confirms that all college provision is good or satisfactory. However, we are strongly committed to quality improvement and we have clear strategies to drive up quality.
We have a small senior management team who provide leadership in the strategic direction of the college. Our college management team meets fortnightly to ensure a collegiate approach to new developments. We have excellent teams of staff who are very effective in supporting students and we continually strive to improve the quality of the provision.
The college offers a wide range of courses to provide opportunities for all levels of ability from school links to higher education. There is a good range of vocational provision and we continue to offer courses at all levels from pre-entry to degree level. The college is effective in supporting individual learners and students with learning difficulties and disabilities. One of our particular strengths is working with local employers and the college has been successful in achieving Action For Business College status.
We are committed to working with community organisations and the college is considered to have a leading role in the future development of Thanet. The Chair of Governors and the Principal are members of the Thanet Local Strategic Partnership and the Principal is a member of the Board of the East Kent Partnership. There is also a well established partnership arrangement with Canterbury Christchurch University, which has a campus in Thanet.
The main college campus overlooks the sea in Broadstairs, Kent. This is an attractive landscaped site, which comprises an original listed building together with a range of modern specialist education and training facilities, including a childcare centre, a good central Learning Resource Centre with a Conference suite and a Professional Development Centre. A £4m project has just been completed on the Pegwell building to create superb restaurant facilities and training kitchens for our Centre of Vocational Excellence in Hospitality and Catering. The college also has the East Kent Building Trades School and community based provision.
The college works in close partnership with schools and the Thanet Consortium, which is often quoted as best practice within the county. We have a successful increased flexibility programme and this year the college has established a new hospitality and catering pre-vocational training centre for students aged 14-16. Kent County Council has developed a new multi skilled pre-vocational centre within Thanet and the college is one of the lead partners in this development.
The current college budget is circa £15m and the college is a category A for financial health.
Thanet is an attractive place to live. Situated in Broadstairs, the College benefits from a wonderful seaside location and surrounding countryside. Blue flag beaches, along with one of the driest and sunniest climates in Britain, attract many visitors and students from overseas.
New developments such as the Westwood Cross Retail Centre in Broadstairs, the Turner Centre in Margate and the Harbour/Marina project in Ramsgate are making a significant impact on the area. The planned development of Kent International Airport at Manston and the introduction of the high-speed train from London to Ramsgate will rapidly improve national and international transport links.
Residential accommodation is good and affordable. Margate and Ramsgate are frequently identified as national hot spots for property investment. Georgian terraces and Victorian homes have been preserved in areas of redevelopment. The Isle of Thanet also has a range of small characterful villages within the rural community. Thanet has considerable attractions for families and there is an excellent choice of schools within the area.
